Hi There,
Sign up today to volunteer for one hour each week reading aloud to little kids!
More than half of all kindergartners in our state are entering school without the social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills they need to be successful. Research shows that those who start behind often stay behind. The good news is that reading with kids on a regular basis can make a real difference. United Way of King County is currently recruiting volunteers to read aloud to young children (ages 3-5), one or two at a time (not group reading), at preschools, Head Start classrooms, and child care centers throughout King County. All opportunities are between 9am-4pm Monday to Friday only. Sites and shift times are listed on our website. Visit www.uwkc.org/readers and click the “register today” link at the bottom of our webpage to get involved or email readers@uwkc.org for more information. Thank you!

A 90-something who lives in a one bedroom apartment alone near 17th and Madison hopes for help. Visitors are rare, and she does not go out. She mainly needs help with someone to do the laundry and vacuum—a volunteer already visits every other weekend, but she really needs more help than that and we’re trying to find a volunteer to visit on alternate weekends. The current volunteer is happy to meet with you and this lovely lady to introduce you.

A growing volunteer opportunity in your neighborhood consists of driving clients to doctor appointments, grocery shopping or other chores. We carefully match volunteers to opportunities based on their personalities, neighborhood, and preferences. Currently,...

She likes to keep her apartment neat and tidy, and hopes for the occasional visit from a friendly volunteer to help her out. Her and her cat would love a visit from you.
Awesome Senior Waits for Visits from You. A past volunteer describes this 70-something woman like this: "She is wonderful!!! I have been doing more socializing then house work. She also has mobility problems which make it difficult for her to bend a lift, so it's really tough for her to even sweep her floors. If you have an hour or two every other week...

Middle-income students experience slight gains in reading performance during the summer while low-income students move backwards in reading achievement by more than two months (Cooper 1996). YTP's Summer Reading Program is designed to narrow that achievement gap and...
