Shanna Stevenson of the Washington Women’s History Consortium in Olympia speaks about Mountaineers Club founder Cora Smith Eaton, a dedicated suffragist who climbed Mount Rainier in 1909 and planted a “Votes for Women” flag on its summit. Dr. Eaton was the first woman to reach the East Peak of Mount Olympus on August 15, 1907, in what is now Olympic National Park, and went on to summit all six major peaks in Washington. Free and open to the public; to reserve a seat, email president@womanscenturyclub.org. Stevenson is the author of "Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices: The Campaign for Equal Rights in Washington" (Washington State Historical Society). Books will be available for purchase (and autographing!) courtesy of Elliott Bay Book Co. The talk is presented by the Woman’s Century Club (www.womanscenturyclub.org), a 120-year-old Seattle social club for women founded by suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt, which welcomes new members. |
