Although the Cascade snowpack is roughly normal this year (which is low for a La Nina year in which we expect it to be above normal), the central Sierra Mountains of central CA have been hit very, very hard.
The Alpine Meadows ski resort near Lake Taho is closed today due to unprecedented snowfall, high high winds and avalanche hazards. The nearby Squaw Valley has had the greatest seasonal snowfall on record, with 45 inches overnight at 8200 ft. Snow has even hit lower elevations in northern CA, with prima seadiva has added a photo to the pool: March 25 2011.

My Arm is one of those performances that defies easy explanation. It's a circuitous web of language and ideas, sudden sharp turns, and screeching halts. There's a take on a high school valedictory speech that's so funny I almost inhaled my cough drop; a pair of former child actors; a Robert Frost poem; and a bizarre boat tour, all interspersed with video and live music performed by Smith on a hammered dulcimer, an autoharp, and a bowed psaltery.

A couple of weeks ago, The Valley View, the monthly community newsletter of the Greater Madison Valley Community Council, broke the story that the City of Seattle had settled a lawsuit with the twelve Madison Valley residents who had sued over stormwater and sewer damage to their houses. This original reporting by citizen journalist David Jacobson resulted from the discovery of the settlement through a public records request. Jacobson learned that the City had agreed to pay the plaintiffs

Seattle PostGlobe - Top News: Theater Commentary: Of Mice and Men, The Happy Ones
What is the “American character?” The recently opened production of John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” offers one view that reflects the mood of the 1930s. Yet another show currently running across town suggests an opposite one, only two generations later. The play version of the novel adheres tightly to this literary classic, as it was adapted by Steinbeck himself. The story of two drifters, George (Troy Fischnaller) and his “slow” partner Lennie (Charles Leggett), voices the vanquished hopes and frustrations commonly felt in the Great Depression. When we first meet them, the pair are on the way to new work as hired hands on a Soledad, California ranch, having narrowly escaped a mob upstate that Lennie’s hulking missteps drew. The jobs offer the latest in a string of fresh starts, although George’s efforts to protect his disadvantaged friend will inevitably and tragically fail. It’s George and Lennie’s partnership that makes them different from their fellow ranch hands, a peculiarity that all comment on. “What’s...
